An amazing opportunity to step into strategic science leadership in Queensland government. We are looking for someone to set the direction and lead a team of scientists to deliver ecological products and services in condition, assessment and monitoring. You will be managing complex programs, people, budgets to support decision making for government and landholders now and into the future.
This unique role requires high level leadership skills, as well as high level scientific knowledge in the field of ecological monitoring and assessment of ecosystems and species. The successful candidate will need to step back from doing the science so they can guide, connect and communicate the important work of the team with internal and external stakeholders. As well as work collaboratively across the Queensland Herbarium and Biodiversity Science business unit to deliver on our shared purpose.

The Queensland Herbarium and Biodiversity Science (QHBS) business unit is seeking a Science Leader to drive the program of work of our Ecological Science team. We are looking for a collaborative, communicative and responsive leader who can support and develop their people and drive the direction of the program to support decision making for government and landholders.

We need a strong leader who is a team player and can lead and initiate change. A growth mindset and ability to think outside of the box is important for this position to help the team bring innovative ideas to fruition to continually improve our science services and products. In addition, you will need to manage multiple concurrent projects from beginning to end, on time and on budget.

It will be your job to develop, empower and support the people in your team, as well as develop and sustain good working relationships with internal and external stakeholders. You need to be able to promote and stand up for your team and their science but also be able to compromise and find alternative ways of delivering when required.

You will need to develop and deliver new and established projects and programs using yours and your teams' knowledge of ecological science. Experience writing briefing notes, project plans and reports is essential, as is the ability to concisely provide strategic, technical and operational advice to the Director and senior management in DETSI in a timely manner.

As a key member of the QHBS leadership team, you will work closely with the Director and other Science Leaders to help build a positive, respectful and
collaborative work culture.
