The role 

Reporting to the Coordinator, Forensic Property Point, you will participate in the day-to-day operations of the Forensic Property Point Team to ensure that a coordinated, effective, and efficient workflow is achieved and high-quality forensic property management services are provided. Applying your knowledge of sample handling procedures, WHS guidelines, high level of accuracy and proficiency in the use of various Laboratory Information Systems (LIMS) in a complex scientific environment, you will:

  • Support the Coordinator in the monitoring, coordination and processing of all incoming and outgoing forensic evidence to a standard acceptable in a court of law
  • Proactively prioritise the workload of Forensic Property Point including times with reduced staffing levels and participate in the roster for staff to deliver timely and high-quality services
  • Monitor and actively perform
    • receipt of items and packages for forensic testing from various government agencies in accordance with legal and policy processes (this may include illicit drugs, biological specimens, autopsy samples, and explosives residue)
    • any/all processes in relation to registration, receipt, storage, transfer, allocation and return of forensic exhibits and specimens
    • all processes involved in disposal of specimens/forensic exhibits and controlled drugs, ensuring compliance with accreditation and legislative requirements.
  • Maintain the security and integrity of items through documented continuity and provide evidence in court, including the provision of witness statements for the purpose of exhibit continuity.

The successful person

You will have:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of sample handling procedures and willingness to receive and handle various types of forensic material including illicit drugs, biological materials, and various physical evidence
  • Proven knowledge and skills to ensure procedures are in accordance with Workplace Health and Safety guidelines and performed to an acceptable level of accuracy
  • Excellent communication skills with proven ability to provide quality service to diverse external clients and various competing stakeholders in a large and complex organisation
  • Ability to organise and prioritise daily workloads and accept non-routine tasks, sometimes working with minimal supervision
  • Capacity to work independently and as a member of a team ensuring that effective workflow is maintained in fast-paced situations
  • Proven proficiency in the use of various Laboratory Information Systems (LIMS) and demonstrated high accuracy data entry skills
  • Ability to follow detailed documented policies and procedures with a commitment to the principles of quality management and continuous quality and process improvement
  • Evidence of required vaccination (Hepatitis B)
  • Whilst not mandatory, possession of relevant tertiary qualifications in a related discipline will be highly regarded

About us

Located at Coopers Plains, Brisbane, FSQ operates specialised Forensic Biology, Forensic Chemistry and Forensic Operations functions that provides forensic services and expert advice to the Queensland Police Service (QPS) and the Coroner's Court of Queensland.

Our work at FSQ involves exposure to material related to deaths and criminal offences that may be confronting, due to its graphic and personal nature. Sensitive and professional management of exhibits and information is a critical requirement of this role. The successful candidate will have personal qualities that include well developed resilience, tact and effective strategies for managing themselves and their ability to support colleagues in situations that may be distressing and stressful.

Please note that Forensic Science Queensland has recently been through a Machinery of Government change, and as of 1 July 2024, was administratively assigned to the Department of Justice.
