The Senior Practitioner (Court) provides practice induction support and supervision individually and in groups with the purpose of instilling a culture of continuous growth and improvement in all areas of youth justice court practice.

The Senior Practitioner (Court) is responsible for supporting court practice across the region and/or Youth Justice Service Centre to ensure high quality service delivery in accordance with policy, legislation and practice guidelines. The Senior Practitioner (Court) will operate within a team that is focused upon advancing the continuous improvement of Youth Justice court capability, through the provision of specialist advice, practice directions, and quality assurance mechanisms.

As Senior Practitioner (Court) you will specifically:

  • Demonstrate cultural capability and/or a commitment to developing cultural capability to ensure an inclusive culture that aligns with the Human Rights Act 2019 and supports departmental programs and community partnerships aimed at preserving cultural connections for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
  • Contribute to the implementation of strategies and systems to advance high quality court practice, delivered in accordance with legislative frameworks, departmental policies, procedures, and the Youth Justice Practice Framework.
  • Assist in fostering collaborative legal stakeholder partnerships, including facilitating and leading regular court stakeholder meetings.
  • Provide authoritative advice on all facets of youth justice court practice and work with regional and service centre leadership to build accountability, capability, skills and knowledge in Youth Justice court practice, including partnerships with regional staff and statewide Practice teams to enhance the quality of verbal submissions, pre-sentence reports, affidavits, evidentiary materials and representation in the courts through:
    • Induction, coaching and mentoring to departmental officers in court practice and submissions
    • upskilling and maintaining quality standards for court reports and documentation, including quality assurance of Pre Sentence Reports and other written materials for court
    • providing information on legislation and training to regional service centre staff, including initial practice enquiry advice and support regarding complex court matters
    • working with the Central Court Team to brief Crown Law on local matters as appropriate
    • providing court practice supervision, including observations in court, as required to officers who are involved in court to maintain quality court standards and a continuous improvement service delivery ethos.Demonstrate cultural capability and a commitment to developing cultural capability to ensure an inclusive culture that aligns with the Human Rights Act 2019 and supports departmental programs and community partnerships aimed at preserving cultural connections for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
  • Contribute to the promotion of an accountable, fair and safe workplace culture through management practices that foster high quality performance, continuous improvement, innovation, health and safety, equal employment opportunities, anti-discrimination and performance management.
  • Actively participate in Leadership Team planning for the development and review of service centre plans and priorities.
  • Actively practice and promote excellence in service delivery and public administration and identify opportunities for improving client service and collaborative practice.
