Coronial Court Support Officer

The Coronial Court Support Officer is part of the Operations Team and case manages coronial investigation files, prepares court documents, and communicates with relevant stakeholders on behalf of the Coroner and the Coroners Court of Queensland.

The Coronial Court Support Officer works with the Coronial Services Officer and Coronial Support Officer to ensure family focused, coronial services are delivered to the bereaved in a timely and accurate manner. The position is responsible for communicating with, and delivering services to coroners, families, witnesses, court users and stakeholders.

This role requires you to work in a dynamic, demanding and often sensitive operational environment, while maintaining a high quality of output and engagement with internal and external stakeholders.

• Case manage complex coronial matters, including preparing court forms and documents, correspondence and other written documents and supporting the coroner in court during inquest and pre-inquest proceedings.
• Develop and maintain effective working relationships with coronial partner agencies, the Queensland Police Service (QPS) and Queensland Health as well as other court stakeholders.
• Communicate (in writing and verbally) with the QPS, medical, legal and other agency practitioners, members of the public and family members in relation to the progress of a coronial matter.
• Coordinate the management of matters to inquest, including preparing briefs of evidence (exhibits), liaising with other CCQ staff, members of the legal profession, witnesses and families, coordinating venues (in remote centres, if required), recording evidence in accordance with the Recording of Evidence Act 1962 and opening, adjourning and closing courts, administering prescribed oaths or affirmations, and performing other court-related duties.
• Ensure timely coding of detailed information about Queensland coronial investigations into the National Coronial Information System (NCIS) and ensure that coding practices are accurate, efficient, and meet coding quotas and KPIs.
• Maintain accurate records in a court database in line with court registry practices to support accurate advice to court users and ensure quality assurance and consistency for effective monitoring and reporting processes.
• Contribute to the development of effective and efficient registry practices by advising the Coronial Support Coordinator and/or Manager, Operations about workloads, procedures and other administrative matters and staffing issues as required.
• Provide peer support to other Coronial Court Support Officers, with the provision of timely and constructive feedback, including case management training and mentoring to support in the development of staff to meet service delivery requirements.
• Participate in team meetings with internal and external stakeholders to support and contribute to efficient registry practices and an inclusive and psychologically safe work environment.
• Provide general assistance to the Director Operations, coroners, counsel assisting (in-house and external legal officers) and managers including performing other general administrative tasks such as management of the coroner's court diary.
• Carry out any other reasonable duties as directed by the Coronial Support Coordinator, coroners, Manager Operations or Director Operations ensuring
adherence to professional standards and organisational objectives.

The work of the Coroners Court of Queensland will expose employees to disturbing material including offending behaviours, criminal activity and other explicit, distressing or offensive content. Employees will be required to engage with persons who have and may continue to experience distressing circumstances and/or are involved with the coronial system.
