Principal Lawyer

We’re seeking a Principal Lawyer to deliver high-quality advocacy and legal services for the Queensland Building and Construction Commission, including representation in QCAT, Supreme Court and Court of Appeal, drafting complex documents, preparing litigation plans and providing strategic legal advice. In this role you’ll lead and mentor a team of lawyers, coordinate continuing legal education, and build strong partnerships with internal stakeholders to support QBCC’s statutory functions and risk-mitigation activities. Key Outcomes and Accountabilities
- Conduct complex legal and other research and providing legal advice to the Senior Leadership Team relevant to the statutory functions of the QBCC and contemporary, contentious and emerging issues within the construction industry.
- Lead, mentor and develop a team of lawyers, including providing clear guidance, constructive feedback, with the development of in-house capability as a priority.
- Proactively partner with and cultivate effective working relationships with internal clients and key internal stakeholders, to foster a cooperative approach to achieving the QBCC's aims.
- Assist in the professional development of lawyers by co-ordinating a continuing legal education program.
Candidate Attributes
- Demonstrated high-level litigation experience, preferably related to government and preferably within administrative law, or civil litigation.
- Demonstrated ability to lead and develop lawyers, and mentor other legal practitioners in the QBCC, with previous experience in a similar role.
- Proven capacity to appear as an advocate on behalf of the QBCC, analyse complex legal and factual issues, and draft complex legal advice.
- High level interpersonal skills including a high competency in written and oral communications, including the ability to effectively partner with and manage stakeholders.
- Proven experience being proactive, and client and solutions focused, with the ability to work independently and meet deadlines.
