We’re Queensland’s electrical safety regulator, part of the Office of Industrial Relations.
Our purpose is to improve electrical safety and reduce the risk of death and injury from electric shock, fire and explosion.
We work with Queensland's electrical industry to help keep all Queenslanders safe around electricity, at work, at home and in the community.
We do this by:
- making sure electrical safety laws and standards are followed
- managing workers' and contractors’ electrical licenses
- registering, accrediting and certifying electrical equipment
- providing electrical safety information, education and training including electrical product recalls and safety alerts.

A vacancy currently exists in our Supply, Networks and Licensing Unit for a Director.

OIR contributes to the government's strategic objectives in the areas of workplace health and safety, electrical safety, workers' compensation, industrial relations and labour hire regulation.
We seek to improve work health and safety, electrical safety and workers' compensation performance through regulatory and policy frameworks and the provision of evidenced-based services and advice. We also develop, implement and maintain policy and legislation relevant to industrial relations in Queensland including whole of Government responsibility for public sector enterprise bargaining and the regulation of Queensland's labour hire industry.
As the Director of Supply, Networks and Licensing you lead an efficient flexible and responsive team that strives for to keep all Queenslanders safe around electricity.
Some of your responsibilities will include:
- Develop and lead the strategic direction about regulatory strategy, framework and operations for the electricity supply industry, renewable energy and energy storage industries, and private electricity networks.
- Provide high level strategic advice and make recommendations to the Executive Director and other key stakeholders pertaining to contemporary, contentious, and emerging issues within the scope of the role.
- Lead the regulation of electricity generation, transmission, and distribution networks; prescribed electricity entities; and high voltage and hazardous area installations under the Electrical Safety Act (2002).
- Lead the development of policy frameworks and legislation, information and advice, and responsive delivery strategies for electrical licensing.
- Lead the team in a challenging and changing environment and promote a culture of collaboration, accountability, and service delivery excellence.
To be successful in this role you will need:
