- Making sure work health and safety laws are followed.
- Investigating work-related fatalities and serious injuries.
- Educating workplaces on ways to comply with legislation.
- Taking legal action when work health and safety laws are broken.
- Educating employees and employers on their legal obligations.

A vacancy currently exists at Mt Gravatt for a Principal Inspector (Construction).

OIR contributes to the government's strategic objectives in the areas of workplace health and safety, electrical safety, workers' compensation, industrial relations and labour hire regulation.

We seek to improve work health and safety, electrical safety and workers' compensation performance through regulatory and policy frameworks and the provision of evidenced-based services and advice. We also develop, implement and maintain policy and legislation relevant to industrial relations in Queensland including whole of Government responsibility for public sector enterprise bargaining and the regulation of Queensland's labour hire industry.

As a Principal Inspector (Construction) within Workplace Health and Safety Queensland (WHSQ), you will be part of an efficient flexible and responsive team that strives for safer workplaces. Some of your responsibilities will include:

- Interpret complex legislation.
- Identify and enforce breaches of legislation.
- Educate a very board range of industry sectors to ensure they are compliant with Work Health & Safety legislations.
- Work autonomously and part of a high functioning team.
- Be adaptable to significant workplace change.

To be successful in this role you will need:

- Strong complex writing skills or demonstrated ability to be able to read, interpret, apply and elementise legislation in a regulatory capacity and a demonstrable ability to write investigative reports.
- Prior demonstrated experience in applying workplace health and safety protocols, community enforcement or other such regulatory enforcement would be highly regarded.
- Strong stakeholder engagement and management skills, including the ability to deal with and diffuse conflict and liaise with the community around sensitive matters.
- Demonstrated experience in leading teams and supporting others in a regulatory environment, to achieve desired outcomes in high pressure environments.
- Demonstrated record of achievement in the management of occupational health and safety related projects in a team environment requiring significant planning, analysis and implementation.
- Strong time management skills, with the ability to balance multiple priorities. This role will challenge and develop your ability to engage with stakeholders, partner and educate the community in safety matters and ensure compliance within a regulatory framework.
