As a Technical Officer in the Soil and Land Resources team, you will be working on projects delivering high-quality soil analysis and soil maps of Queensland and Australia, leading the laboratory analysis associated with soil surveys in remote areas. As well as managing the maintenance and improvement of the Queensland State Soil collection.

As the Scientific Officer you will:
• Conduct high quality sample preparation and chemical analyses on a range of soils, in accordance with NATA Quality Assurance and Workplace Health and Safety protocols.
• Operate and maintain a Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectrometer and other associated instrumentation.
• Assist in the development, evaluation, monitoring and documentation of analytical chemistry methods and maintain agreed schedules to ensure work is carried out efficiently and business requirements are met.
• Play a role in the preparation of analytical reports arising from the analysis of samples as well as the statistical analysis and interpretation of data emanating from the analyses
• Supervise and train staff in relevant aspects of laboratory operations, including the principles of analytical chemistry, good laboratory practice and quality assurance.
• Manage the day-to-day operation of the Queensland State Soil Collection, including sample management, recordkeeping, logistics and continued system development and maintenance.
• Foster a workplace culture that supports and promotes the interests of First Nations people and actively engage through our work to contribute to better outcomes for First Nations people.

We're looking for the best suited applicant for the role. This position requires:
• Demonstrated expertise in sample preparation and scanning procedures associate with an FTIR pertaining to the assessment of soil and sediment samples. (experience gained in NATA accredited analytical laboratory is advantageous).
• Demonstrated experience in operating an FTIR spectrometer with high competency in sample preparation, troubleshooting and fault-finding (experience with OPUS and OPUS lab software packages is highly desirable).
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively and efficiently in a team environment and to contribute to maintaining a high quality, timely and efficient laboratory operations.
• Good communication, interpersonal, and organisational skills with ability to follow work plans and see tasks through to completion.
• Demonstrated experience in the use of databases as well as laboratory information Management System, statistical and word-processing software.
• Demonstrated experience running an archive\collection, particular in regard to sample management, recordkeeping, logistics and continued system development and maintenance
