Kowanyama State School is seeking applications for a dedicated Head of Department - Junior Secondary.

This is a temporary full-time position commencing Term 3 until the end of 2025, with possible extension.

Kowanyama is situated on the western side of Cape York Peninsula. Bound to the west by the Gulf of Carpentaria and on the banks of Magnificent Creek, the community is home to approximately 1200 people.

About the School

Kowanyama State School is a Kindy - Year 10 remote indigenous community school on the Gulf of Carpentaria in Far North Queensland with an enrolment of approximately 220 students and is situated approx. 600km North West of Cairns. At Kowanyama State School, we strive every day to uphold our school values: respect learning, respect community and respect culture. Our students are active and enthusiastic EALD learners.

About the Opportunity

As the Head of Department - Junior Secondary (Curriculum) you will:

  • Lead curriculum focus in line with school and departmental initiatives for students in years 7 - 10.
  • Participate in delivering the vision of State Schools Division for students in years 7 - 10.
  • Develop the quality of teaching and learning for teachers and students in years 7 - 10.
  • Nurture positive relationships between students, teachers and stakeholders.

The Head of Department (Curriculum) is accountable to and under the direction of the Principal or delegate.

About the Role

You will have responsibilities for leading activities and delivering tasks as follows (but is not limited to):

  • Lead the relevant curriculum areas or whole school program to develop, articulate and commit to a shared educational vision focussed on providing quality learning outcomes for all students.
  • Embed socially just practices in daily school life.
  • Set high standards for student and staff performance.
  • Actively participate in lifelong learning and ongoing professional development.
  • Form partnerships with students, parents, other government agencies, and community groups.
