As a Legal Officer or Assessment Officer in our team, you’ll play a vital role in assessing blue card applications under the Working with Children (Risk Management and Screening) Act 2000. You’ll apply your legal knowledge to ensure only the right people are entrusted to work with children.
We are seeking candidates for future PO3 Legal and Assessment Officer roles. We will assess applications regularly as temporary vacancies arise. If deemed suitable, you may be contacted to discuss your application and further selection activities may take place. Pre-employment vetting, forms part of our selection process, therefore you will be asked to submit detailed documentation prior to your commencement in a temporary role.

About the Role:
As a Legal or Assessment Officer, you will play a crucial role in safeguarding the wellbeing of children and young people by processing and assessing blue card applications for people who have criminal histories or other assessable information. Your legal acumen and attention to detail will be crucial in assessing applications and providing sound advice based on the Working with Children (Risk Management and Screening) Act 2000.
What You'll Do:
• Assess blue card applications in the best interests of children
• Conduct risk assessments and draft clear, evidence-based recommendations
• Liaise with applicants and stakeholders, gathering and recording critical information
• Provide clear legal and procedural advice to internal and external stakeholders
• Manage case files efficiently and contribute to a high-performing, collaborative team
• Contribute to a positive team environment and uphold our values of equity, diversity, and inclusion.
What we're looking for:
• Legal acumen and the ability to interpret and apply legislation, in particular the Working with Children (Risk Management and Screening) Act 2000
• Strong analytical and decision-making skills
• Strong written communication, especially in drafting legal documents and reports
• Excellent time management and organizational skills.
• Ability to work independently and make informed decisions.
• A passion for safeguarding Queensland's children and young people

What you need to know before applying
• To be eligible for employment in this position, you must hold a university degree (undergraduate and/or postgraduate including graduate certificate and graduate diploma) from a recognised tertiary institution in one of the following disciplines:
• Law
• Social work
• Human Services or social welfare
• Psychology or behavioural science
• You will need to provide a copy of your qualifications, with originals sighted prior to engagement. If your qualification is from an overseas institution, you are responsible for obtaining official recognition (see https://desbt.qld.gov.au/training/training-careers/osqrecognition). You will be required to provide this prior to engagement.
