About Gordonvale State School

Gordonvale State School has provided quality education to the students of Gordonvale for in excess of 100 years. The school has a long tradition of excellence in academic achievement, sport, the arts and community engagement.

Gordonvale State School is committed to achieving quality learning outcomes for all students. Our Prep to Year 6 curriculum is based on the mandated Australian Curriculum Guidelines. The school provides programs for extension of high achieving students, early intervention programs, literacy and reading intervention and special needs support.

Sustainability Education is a curriculum component of the school with the school gaining recognition of these programs by winning many and varied sustainability awards including being named the 2010 Keep Australia Beautiful greenest and healthiest school in Queensland, the 2011 Premier's Climate Smart School Community Award and the 2011 Regional Showcase Award for Innovation.

About the Role

In this highly rewarding position, you'll have the opportunity to:

  • Provide educational counselling and support to ensure the best possible outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, families and communities.
  • Foster strong connections by delivering culturally responsive support and advocacy.
  • Promote understanding and inclusivity by providing cross-cultural awareness training to the wider school community where appropriate and required.
  • Support students and families to increase engagement and attendance, as part of the school's Engagement and Education Support Team.
  • Engage in, and initiate, a wide variety of school-based and community projects and events aimed at increasing cultural awareness and engagement, and fostering a sense of inclusion and belonging for all.

Mandatory Requirements for and Identified Role:   

It is a genuine occupational requirement for Identified roles that the position be filled by an Aboriginal person or a Torres Strait Islander person as set out in Section 7 of the Anti Discrimination Act 1991 for the purposes contained in Section 25 of that Act.   

Verification of Aboriginality and/or Torres Strait Island heritage   

For administrative purposes, in relation to an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander identified role, an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person is a person who identifies as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person and is either:   

  • of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent;  
  • accepted as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person by the Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander community in which he or she lives.   

By definition a person who is not an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander cannot be employed (on any basis) to perform the duties of an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander identified role.   

Applicants to this position may have to provide confirmation of their Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander heritage. Requesting proof of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander heritage from applicants helps to make sure that this intention is honoured.
