About the role
- The Joint Training Program (JTP) is a two-year clinical fellowship and higher degree by research (HDR) training program to be offered in the Department of Cardiology.
- The aim of the JTP is to support and capacity build investigator-driven research within the Department of Cardiology.
- The expectation of the JTP is that it will promote, drive and establish high-quality clinical research aligned with the international standing of the Department and create the potential for independent and competitively awarded research funding.
- TPCH Department of Cardiology has several advanced trainees and fellows, yet few undertake a higher degree (MPhil or PhD) with several well-known barriers, which include; absence from foundational and advanced clinical training, and the associated penalty of decreased income to undertake research. These barriers may be alleviated by implementing an adequately funded and integrated clinical fellowship and research training program.
About you
Our ideal candidate will be someone who can carry out the following key accountabilities in accordance with the Metro North Health's values:
- All candidates are to be enrolled in a recognised HDR programme (e.g.. MPhil-University of Queensland; Masters of Medical Research-Griffith University) at the start of the JTP with completion over the 2-year period. The choice of the HDR will depend on professional interests of the successful candidate and available supervision/mentorship. Requirements and progress to Year 2 of the Fellowship is contingent upon satisfactory progress, meeting all timelines of the HDR and mutually agreed clinical and research activities for Year 2. There is an expectation that the research and clinical training will be highly integrated, consistent with the aims of a joint program, and the candidate submits a suitable and comprehensive thesis at end of the 2-year period that has a high probability of being awarded.
- Year 1 of JTP is primarily research-based with shared clinical commitment.
- Year 2 will be primarily subspeciality clinical fellowship training with a minimum 0.2FTE allocated for research. Overall, half of the allocated time will be spent on research and half on clinical training over the 2 years.
- Up to a maximum of four (4) JTP positions per year will be offered in the cardiology department across the subspeciality training areas.
