About us

The Education, Insurer and Tribunal Services unit plays a critical role in supporting the operation of the Medical Assessment Tribunals (MAT) under Queensland's Workers' Compensation and Rehabilitation Act 2003. The Tribunals provide independent medical decisions about workers' injuries, helping to ensure fair and consistent outcomes across the workers' compensation scheme.

In addition to tribunal services, the unit monitors insurer compliance and performance, delivers training, administers information grants, and works closely with stakeholders to promote improved rehabilitation and return-to-work outcomes.

About the role

As a Senior Tribunal Coordinator, you will manage an allocated caseload of referrals from workers' compensation insurers — overseeing the entire tribunal process from referral through to final outcome. You will ensure compliance with legislative requirements, provide technical advice, and liaise with both internal and external stakeholders. This is a critical role supporting efficient, transparent, and effective tribunal operations.

You will also contribute to continuous improvement initiatives and help build team capability, ensuring that the tribunal experience is positive and professional for all parties involved.

Key Responsibilities:

As Senior Tribunal Coordinator, you will:

  • Independently manage a caseload of insurer referrals:
    • Oversee the full lifecycle of referrals, ensuring compliance with legislative requirements.
    • Triage cases and verify that all necessary documentation aligns with MAT Referral Guidelines.
    • Manage tribunal administration and conduct quality reviews of tribunal findings.
    • Maintain accurate records in the case management system.
    • Identify risks and coordinate security arrangements as needed.
  • Liaise with a broad range of stakeholders — workers, representatives, insurers, and tribunal members — explaining relevant legislation and tribunal processes
    clearly and professionally.
  • Deliver excellent service by ensuring tribunal processes are efficient, respectful, and supportive for all involved.
  • Support team performance by:
    • Coaching and mentoring team members.
    • Contributing to onboarding of new staff and development of training materials and procedures.
  • Drive business improvement by identifying opportunities to enhance service delivery and regulatory processes.
  • Assist with operational and administrative tasks such as:
    • Chaperoning workers during medical examinations and providing first aid support as required.
    • Managing reception duties and tribunal session bookings.
    • Supporting financial and travel processing activities.

Important considerations:

  • You may be exposed to confronting or distressing content in this role. OIR offers professional supervision and access to an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) to support your wellbeing. Applicants should consider their personal resilience and coping strategies before applying.
  • Flexibility is required to support emerging service priorities. You may be asked to undertake alternate duties or work at different locations on a temporary or permanent basis.

What we are looking for:

We will assess your suitability based on your knowledge, skills, experience, personal qualities, and potential to contribute to OIR's culture of equity, diversity, respect, and inclusion.

Highly regarded:

  • Knowledge of workers' compensation and/or experience working in a tribunal, court, or regulatory environment.

Please refer to role profile for full details.

Applications to remain current for 12 months.
