Exciting opportunity as a Senior Legal Officer to make a significant impact and influence law reform in the Department of Justice. Strategic Policy and Legislation has wide reaching responsibilities that support the operation of Queensland’s justice system and leads the development and coordination of the implementation of proposals for primary and subordinate legislation within the Justice portfolio.
As the Senior Legal Officer you will develop and implement legislative and policy projects in relation to civil, public and administrative law issues. You will enjoy a flexible working environment with excellent employment conditions which may include telecommuting for part of the working week.

About the role
Strategic Policy and Legislation (SPL) has wide reaching responsibilities that support the operation of Queensland's justice system. SPL has teams that focus on specific aspects of policy and legislation, as well as a specialist project team. The Civil Law teams focus on civil, public and administrative law issues including courts legislation, domestic and family violence and child protection, guardianship and administration; privacy and right to information, civil liability and property, trust and succession law. The successful applicant will be placed in a policy and legislation team focused on civil law having regard to SPL's business needs.
As the Senior Legal Officer you will provide high level advice on complex justice policy issues and develop options, policies, strategies and initiatives. You will develop and implement legislative and policy projects in relation to civil, public and administrative law matters.
What you will bring
To thrive in this role, you will need:
- Demonstrated high level ability to understand key issues and emerging trends in justice and civil law policy and their implications for the Queensland Government and the community;
- Proven ability or demonstrably transferable skills to provide strategic advice and analysis on wide-ranging complex policy and legislative options;
- To take responsibility for managing and completing work projects within established timeframes and adjust priorities quickly as circumstances dictate;
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with team and internal and external stakeholders to support and formulate policy outcomes; and
- High level oral and written communication and negotiation skills and the ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
