About the Role
The Department of the Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation (DETSI) is seeking a dynamic and experienced Data Governance Principal to lead the establishment of a new data governance function. This role is central to delivering DETSI's Data Strategy, which envisions an agency empowered by evidence, data insights, and experience.

As the Data Governance Principal, you will provide strategic leadership to ensure data is treated as a valuable asset across its lifecycle. You'll work closely with teams across the department to align data governance practices with DETSI's vision and principles, which focus on unification, accessibility, management, and protection of data. This is a unique opportunity to influence how data is used to support DETSI's strategic objectives and deliver value to Queensland's economy, environment and community.

What You'll Do
In this role, you'll lead the charge in building DETSI's data governance capability. You'll develop and oversee enterprise-wide policies and frameworks that enable effective data use while ensuring compliance with legislative and organisational requirements.

Collaboration will be key, as you'll work with stakeholders across the department to embed a culture of data-driven decision-making. You'll also challenge existing processes, driving innovation and continuous improvement in how data is managed and shared.

Your work will directly support DETSI's Data Strategy, ensuring data is discoverable, interoperable, and reusable, while safeguarding its security and compliance. By enabling actionable insights, you'll help DETSI deliver on its commitment to a thriving Queensland environment and economy.

What We're Looking For
We're seeking a strategic thinker with a proven track record in data governance. You'll need extensive experience in developing and implementing enterprise-wide policies and frameworks, as well as the ability to align data initiatives with organisational priorities.

Strong stakeholder engagement skills are essential, as you'll be working with diverse teams and senior leaders to drive collaboration and achieve shared goals. A deep understanding of data ethics, compliance, and lifecycle management will also be highly valued.

Leadership experience in building organisational capability, particularly through professional development programs, will set you apart.

Why Join Us?
This is an exciting opportunity to shape the future of data governance in a forward thinking agency. You'll play a key role in delivering DETSI's Data Strategy, which prioritises a unified, accessible, and well-managed approach to data.

By joining DETSI, you'll contribute to initiatives that deliver real value to Queensland's economy, environment, and community. You'll also be part of a collaborative and inclusive team that values innovation, diversity, and continuous improvement.

Applications to remain current for 12 months.
