Forensic Science Queensland (FSQ) is seeking experienced and motivated Senior Forensic Research Scientists (4 x Permanent Positions) to lead and deliver innovative scientific projects in forensic biology and/or forensic chemistry. These roles support the advancement of forensic capabilities and contribute directly to the integrity of the Queensland justice system.

Please note that following a Machinery of Government (MoG) change, as of 1 July 2024, Forensic Science Queensland was administratively assigned to the Department of Justice. 

About the Role

As a senior scientist, you will:

  • Lead and manage scientific research and validation projects to improve forensic biology and/or chemistry practices.
  • Analyse complex data to draw evidence-based conclusions and provide detailed scientific reports.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external stakeholders to introduce new technologies and quality improvements.
  • Ensure compliance with legislative, ethical, and accreditation standards (e.g. NATA/ISO).
  • Contribute to research publications, student supervision, and science outreach activities.

To be successful in this position, you will have:

  • Strong expertise in forensic biology and/or forensic chemistry, with knowledge of current industry developments.
  • Demonstrated experience leading scientific projects and delivering high-quality research outputs.
  • Excellent problem-solving, analytical and communication skills.
  • Understanding of forensic legislation, ethics, and quality systems, including NATA/ISO accreditation.
  • Experience in a forensic laboratory environment is highly regarded.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Possession of a relevant undergraduate degree with a major in science, molecular biology, chemistry, forensic science (biology or chemistry) or related field is mandatory for this position.
  • Post graduate research qualifications, or five years' experience in a relevant area of practice is highly desirable for this role.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and work effectively in a team-based environment.
  • Current Class C driver's licence.
  • Willingness to work with potentially distressing material and comply with mandatory health and vaccination requirements (including Hepatitis B).
