Strategic Policy Child and Family shapes the department’s strategic direction to meet the needs of children and families and eliminate disproportionate representation.
We do this by providing strategic policy advice in collaboration with other units, the department’s regions, other government agencies, and community controlled and non-government partners.
Maximising life outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, young people and families can only be achieved through genuine partnership and coordinated effort between government agencies and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities.

Strategic Policy and Legislation has four main areas of focus:
• Strategic policy: policy advice and development to support strategic decision making and systems reform
• Legislation: ensuring our legislation is fit-for-purpose and promotes the best interests of the child
• Intergovernmental relations: securing improved outcomes for Queensland children and families with other states and territories and the Commonwealth
• Research and evaluation: ensuring our policies and programs are evidencebased
Your contribution
The Manager is responsible for leading a strategic, legal policy or intergovernmental relations team to provide high level strategic advice to support the Minister and Senior Executives to deliver on the Government's policy and legislative commitments, and reform agenda.
The Manager will work closely with central agencies of government, other State and Commonwealth government departments and the non-government sector to achieve client outcomes.
Your responsibilities
As a Manager you will:
• Prepare high level strategic analysis and advice to assist the Director, Executive Director and Deputy Director-General to advise the Minister, Director-General, and senior management.
• Lead strategic policy projects including the development of submissions, Cabinet submissions, Cabinet Budget Review Committee submissions and evaluation frameworks to enable Government to deliver its Child and Family Reform Program and renewal agenda.
• Research and advise on contemporary policy and legislative frameworks, based on evidence and best practice locally, nationally and internationally.
• Develop and maintain productive partnerships with a range of stakeholders to ensure successful negotiation on strategic policy and legislative matters.
• Develop effective service system responses and represent the unit on committees and working groups.
• Lead a legal policy unit to meet all elements of its work program on time and within budget while building the capacity of team members.
• Manage the Policy and Legislation team's Cabinet and Parliamentary work program, consistent with Government commitments and directions set by the Minister and Director-General, meeting all deadlines and performance requirements.
• Support the Director, Executive Director and Deputy Director-General to represent the department in whole of government and intergovernmental forums and negotiations, undertake policy analysis specific to budget and policy initiatives at both Commonwealth and State levels to ensure that Queensland's interests are secured, and that vulnerable Queenslanders receive their fair share of Federal funding and support.
