The Principal Practice Officer, Youth Detention Policy and Practice, is responsible for providing high-level strategic advice and supporting the development of evidence-based best practice in youth detention service delivery. The role involves designing and implementing operational policies and procedures, leading major practice improvement projects, and analysing youth detention trends and performance to inform strategic decision-making.
The position also supports the department’s response to oversight functions, administers statutory reporting functions, and provides expert practice support to staff and stakeholders to ensure transparent, accountable, and effective youth detention service delivery.

Key responsibilities
As Principal Practice Officer, Youth Detention Policy and Practice you will specifically:
• Identify, research, and analyse complex operational and practice issues and lead the development and implementation of evidence based operational policy and practice solutions.
• Prepare high level advice on current practice, relevant operational policy implications, legislation and programs and the preparation of a range of written material including cabinet submissions, executive correspondence, briefing material and information papers in relation to service delivery of youth detention centres.
• Lead, coordinate, plan, implement and monitor progress of major projects within tight timeframes to achieve desired outcomes.
• Liaise and consult with other teams and with various other areas within the Department to identify practice issues and to develop strategic and operational solutions.
• Represent and negotiate on behalf of the organisation in external and internal discussions and relevant working groups about the development of practice initiatives and major youth detention based projects that enhance and develop current practices.
• Provide high level expert advice and information to the Manager, Director and other key stakeholders pertaining to complex youth justice service delivery issues and trends and presenting information for service delivery consideration, inclusive of advice pertaining to evidence based practice and legislation interpretation.
• Work within a team environment, and if necessary as a team leader, to coordinate the activities of team members and contribute to the promotion of an accountable and equitable work environment as delegated by the Manager.
