You’ll play a key role in transforming data management, analysis & delivery in line with DETSI’s strategic goals. This includes improving systems, designing data pipelines that align with FAIR principles, and providing innovative solutions to meet business needs.
As part of the Information & Digital Science Delivery team, you’ll mentor staff, enhance stakeholder relationships, ensure data quality and governance and contribute to technical architectures fostering data accessibility.

The Department of the Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation (DETSI) is seeking a highly skilled Scientific Data Engineer to lead the transformation of our data management, analysis, and delivery capabilities. Thisis a unique opportunity to drive the technical innovation that supports Queensland's environmental, scientific, and business objectives.
About the Role:
As a Scientific Data Engineer with DETSI, you'll play a pivotal role in enhancing the Department's data maturity and capabilities. Working within the Information and Digital Science Delivery team, you'll be responsible for accelerating systems, delivering innovative solutions and improving information accessibility. Through your leadership and expertise, you'll enable DETSI to align with FAIR data principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable), meeting both scientific and business needs.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design, build, and enhance data pipelines and models to ensure consistent, highquality data collection and usage.
- Lead problem-solving initiatives by developing innovative solutions that address complex challenges in data architecture and governance.
- Deliver expert guidance to the development of ETL/ELT processes, enabling timely and reliable access to data for departmental use.
- Provide technical mentoring and leadership to build data engineering capabilities across DETSI teams.
- Ensure all data products meet governance and quality compliance requirements while adhering to best practices.
- Collaborate across teams and stakeholders to develop relationships, foster teamwork, and deliver impactful solutions.
- Foster a workplace culture that supports and promotes the interests of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and actively engage through our work to contribute to better outcomes for First Nations peoples of Australia.
What We're Looking For?
To excel in this role, you'll bring:
- Proven experience in ETL/ELT data processes, modelling data structures, and linking business intelligence systems. Experience with scientific and geo-spatial data is highly valued.
- Strong technical skills in tools such as SQL, Python, Power BI, Databricks, R and modern cloud platforms (e.g., Azure).
- A demonstrated ability to rapidly acquire knowledge about science data management tasks and accessibility best practices.
- Experience in data governance, organisational change, and shaping procedures that align with industry standards.
- Excellent teamwork skills with the ability to motivate and lead in complex, rapidly changing environments.
- High-level written and verbal communication skills, including stakeholder engagement and negotiation abilities.
- The ability to prioritise tasks, meet deadlines, and implement improvements to workflows and systems.
