The Principal Assessment Officer coordinates the risk assessment, triage and assessment of complaints and other matters to ensure the activities of the Assessment team are conducted in compliance with the Office of the Health Ombudsman's (OHO) policies, procedures and legislative requirements as set out in the Health Ombudsman Act 2013.

The role is also responsible for the management of matters referred from assessment to other entities, including reviewing the reports received at the finalisation of the referral to ensure the matter has been appropriately addressed.

In this role you will: 

  • Lead and coordinate the assessment team to meet statutory and organisational performance indicators for timeliness and quality, including ensuring matters relating to corrupt conduct, public interest disclosures, and human rights complaints are managed appropriately and in accordance with the requirements of those relevant legislations.
  • Coordinate and provide technical guidance and direction for the assessment case management process to a high volume of cases, including providing guidance on individual cases and ensuring compliance with records management policies and protocols, data collection and reporting.
  • Determine and document sound administrative assessment decisions and reasons regarding complaints and other matters. This includes decisions as to whether no further action should be taken, or where complaints should be referred for local resolution, conciliation, investigation (for practitioners or systemic issues) and/or referral to another entity and where appropriate, to prepare briefing documents for the Health Ombudsman on high risk, serious matters that raise concerns about issues of public interest and safety.
  • Provide support and supervision to senior assessment officers and assessment officers and assist the Director in providing feedback/coaching and mentoring of staff and generally support and professionally develop staff in their assessment of complaints.
