The Queensland Government is launching a new youth alcohol and drugs treatment service based in Cairns. The voluntary residential program is designed to support young people experiencing moderate to severe substance use challenges. Delivering culturally appropriate care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people and their families including access to cultural health programs, traditional learning practices, and healing activities guided by Elders. You will be employed through the QCHS and based at the residential facility in Edmonton (Cairns). You will work with the leadership team to create, implement and assess programs, based on the Australian Curriculum and Senior pathways, catering for each student's individual needs.   • This is a full-time, permanent teacher position, working alongside a Head of Department and Guidance Officer, teaching students ranging from 13-18 years.
  • Regular state school hours and conditions apply.
  • Teacher will be on staff at the Queensland Children's Hospital School however, the position is based at the North Queensland Youth Alcohol and Other Drug Program in Edmonton, Cairns.
  • Non-contact allocation for this position is in line with primary/special school teachers' award.
  • An additional requirement for all staff in hospital education programs- Vaccination against Preventable Diseases

This position requires the successful applicant to work in hospital and health settings, which have additional workplace requirements from Queensland Health. It is mandatory for all roles that come into direct contact with patients to provide evidence of vaccination or proof of non- susceptibility for the following preventable diseases: Hepatitis B, Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella (chickenpox), Pertussis (whooping cough).
The successful applicant will be provided with official forms to be taken to their local GP for completion and boosters as required. The expectation is that staff have commenced this process before their first work day (it does not need to be completed). Any out-of-pocket costs are refunded to staff through QCHS reimbursement processes.

  • Ability to form positive relationships with young people who may be disengaged and recovering from drug or substance abuse.
  • Understanding of trauma informed approaches.
  • Ability to create, implement and assess personalised learning programs, with support from the Head of Department, so young people can continue their education or move into meaningful post-school pathways.
  • Commitment to working with, and forming positive partnerships with a range of stakeholders including staff from DoE, Health, Youth Support and Advisory Services (YSAS), industry partners and families.
