Senior Technical Officer

We are seeking a knowledgeable and proactive professional to join our Mediation and Conciliation Unit as a Senior Technical Officer. The Mediation and Conciliation Unit provides mediation and conciliation services to homeowners and building contractors to assist in the resolution of residential building work disputes. The service provides an opportunity to resolve disputes through good faith negotiation, alleviating the need for further regulatory intervention. In this pivotal role, you will provide expert technical assistance and education to the parties and your team, to support effective case management, as well as contributing to the development of regulatory compliant negotiated agreements. You will also play a key role in identifying opportunities to enhance our processes, policies, and procedures to support continuous improvement across the team.

The position is based in Brisbane, and the successful candidate will have the option to work from home for up to two days per week under an approved Flexible Work Arrangement that suits the team.

 

Please note: QBCC will be relocating from West End to the Brisbane CBD at the end of 2025.

 

Key Outcomes and Accountabilities

  • Provide leadership and mentoring to the Commission by ensuring the appropriate interpretation and application of the National Construction Code, Australian Standards and QBCC policies and procedures by the Mediation and Conciliation unit
  • Provide technical advice, reports, and information to support and assist the Mediation and Conciliation unit to progress its caseload.
  • Working collaboratively to provide technical advice to support the assessment of conciliation cases including seeking and gathering further information or evidence as required for advice purposes and being able to provide details regarding any technical requirements that may apply for the purposes of resolving disputes at conciliation and what happens where cases are not resolved.

Candidate Attributes

  1. Ability to apply contemporary building standards, practices, legislation, and codes within the construction industry, including demonstrated ability to supervise the performance of all building work.
  2. Manage multiple technical advice requests within tight timeframes. 
  3. Ability to lead in a constructive and collaborative way, particularly when dealing with fellow team members in the mediation and conciliation unit or with owners and builders in event of a site inspection, by applying strong communication, interpersonal and negotiation skills.
  4. The ability to effectively communicate technical advice in written advice or technical reports. 
  5. The ability to effectively communicate technical advice verbally.

Mandatory Requirements 

  • Must hold a builders open or low rise license.
