Operating from within the South region Water Planning and Science team, the Principal Water Planning Officer will be involved in the development of innovative management solutions and policy for the development of Water Plans, Water Management Protocols and other policy relating to the efficient and sustainable management of Queensland’s water resources.

We are looking for highly organised people with a science, policy, or regulatory background to be involved in water plan review projects that are currently underway in line with Queensland Water Act 2000. You will be leading and working in a small team and will be involved in leading and supporting a range of diverse activities to inform water planning processes including collaboration and consultation with internal and external clients; complex desktop research and data analysis; preparing policy papers, water planning instruments and other associated supporting documents; liaising with technical experts and undertaking complex technical reviews; and identifying and supporting building team knowledge and skills. Travel away from home may be required on occasions and flexible work location arrangements will be considered. Previous experience in an administrative decision-making role, and a manual driver's licence would be highly regarded.
Key accountabilities of the role -
- Lead a small team and coordinate water planning activities within a Region, including coordinating input from associated multi-disciplinary teams to ensure delivery of water planning functions and business objectives.
- Identify emerging issues, policy and planning needs in water resource management and provide expert strategic advice to senior management relevant to the delivery of outcomes for the sustainable management and use of Queensland's natural resources.
- Prepare and/or oversee the preparation of complex reports, policy submissions, briefing notes, presentations, speeches, publications and correspondence for Cabinet, State Committees, Industry/Stakeholder Groups, the Minister and senior departmental management.
- Plan, coordinate and supervise the development and implementation of water plans and other planning instruments relating to sustainable resource management.
- Understand outputs from hydrologic, socioeconomic, ecologic and cultural values assessments and how they relate to water planning.
- Develop, manage and/or oversee multi-disciplinary projects, including consultation with stakeholders, to deliver policy outcomes that are consistent with the overall policy direction of the Queensland Government.
- Develop and maintain constructive working relationships and networks with clients and stakeholders. Work collaboratively and negotiate with colleagues and with other levels of government, industry and non-government organisations to achieve policy outcomes and deliver on Government commitments.
- Represent the Department and the Queensland Government at external forums and on inter-agency and inter-jurisdictional working parties.
- Manage, mentor, coach, and train staff in their development to ensure the necessary skills and motivation exist to respond to service delivery requirements and perform to a high level of skill and expertise.
