The Least Restrictive Practice Clinical Nurse Consultant (CNC) provides expert nursing leadership to promote and embed least restrictive, recovery-oriented practices across the Mental Health Inpatient Units at both Gold Coast University Hospital and Robina Hospital. This role is pivotal in driving cultural and clinical change to reduce reliance on restrictive interventions and enhance consumer autonomy, dignity, and safety.

The Role

An opportunity has become available for a Clinical Nurse Consultant (Least Restrictive Practice Inpatient Unit) to join Gold Coast Health (GCH) where the focus of our 12 000-strong team is on providing world-class health care to people living in the Gold Coast, and northern New South Wales region of Australia.

You will

  • Provide clinical expertise to inpatient teams on managing acute behavioural disturbances.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary case reviews for consumers
  • Act as a clinical escalation point for staff seeking guidance on managing complex behaviours without resorting to restrictive practices.
  • Collaborate with Nurse Unit Manager's and Allied Health to create sensory modulation spaces, quiet zones, and other therapeutic enhancements
  • Lead the clinical governance of restrictive practices, ensuring documentation, reporting, and review processes meet legislative and ethical standards

About you

To be successful in this position you will require:

  • A Bachelor of Nursing or equivalent
  • Registration with the Nursing Midwifery Board of Australia
  • Credentialed through the College of Mental Health Nurses (or be prepared to work towards a credential in Mental Health Nursing)
  • A graduate certificate or greater within a relevant specialty area is highly desirable
  • Driver Licence
  • Evidence of vaccination, or be able to be vaccinated against and remain vaccinated against - Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Pertussis and Hepatitis B
  • Tuberculosis screening, to identify if the tuberculosis vaccination may be required
  • Declaration of serious discipline history must be disclosed
  • Criminal History Screening will be required for new employees (GCH will cover cost)

  • Base salary ranging from $132 562 - $143 924 per annum

About Us

The Mental Health and Specialist Services Directorate provides a range of services that are both community and hospital based. Service areas include Adult and Older Persons Mental Health Inpatient and community services, Child and Youth Mental Health services and Alcohol and Drug and Specialist Services. The Gold Coast Mental Health and Specialist Service manages a total of 127 acute mental health inpatient beds across two hospitals within the Gold Coast Hospital and Health Service (GCHHS). These beds are distributed between Gold Coast University Hospital (GCUH) and Robina Hospital. At GCUH, there are 24 Acute Adult Mental Health inpatient beds, including 12 Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) beds, alongside 20 Acute Older Person Mental Health beds and a 4-bed Specialist Mother and Baby Unit. Additionally, GCUH currently operates 20 beds within the Secure Mental Health Rehabilitation Unit (SMHRU).

Robina Hospital provides 16 Acute Young Adult beds, of which 4 are PICU beds, as well as 8 Short Stay Pathway beds, 8 Extended Treatment beds, and 19 Acute Adult Mental Health inpatient beds.
