The Director, QPS Legal Services leads and manages a high-performing legal team, overseeing the delivery of legal representation, advice, and litigation support. The role also includes responsibility for the coordination of WorkCover claims and civil litigation, ensuring effective liaison with Crown Law and the provision of quality legal information to support the Service's interests.
QPS Legal Services provides strategic legal advice and executive support to the Queensland Police Service across a broad range of corporate and operational matters, including contracts, civil disputes, statutory interpretation, and information management. The unit also represents the Service in courts and tribunals, managing discipline, discrimination, inquests, judicial reviews, and appeals.
You will be responsible for the provision of high quality independent legal advice to the General Counsel and the Queensland Police Service (QPS) Executive Leadership Team. The role includes providing advice on strategic issues and risk management to ensure the QPS has ongoing capability and capacity to deliver government and organisational priorities. You will also be responsible for the management of legal relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
Your key accountabilities
The core capability requirements for this role are:
- Assist the General Counsel in setting the vision and strategic direction for QPS Legal Services.
- Provide high level leadership and management in the planning, implementation and monitoring of projects and initiatives directly related to the Office of the General Counsel.
- Provide strategic advice to the QPS senior executive, relevant inter-agency and private sector stakeholders on legal issues involving the QPS.
- Develop and maintain effective networking relationships with internal stakeholders and senior executives from other government agencies as well as interstate and international counterparts and jurisdictions.
- In consultation with the General Counsel lead the strategic direction, planning and delivery of budgeting, reporting and financial planning activities for QPS Legal Services.
- Comply with public sector legislation, standards, policies, practices and procedures relating to human, financial and physical resources.
- Provide superior, expert and authoritative professional legal advice and representation.
- Demonstrate a commitment to a performance culture by dealing with performance issues and providing a supportive environment where team members strive to provide quality and timely legal and support services.
Role Requirements:
Mandatory - You will be admitted, or be eligible for admission, as a Barrister, Solicitor or Legal Practitioner for the Supreme Court of Queensland.
