A rare executive level opportunity has arisen for a talented, proven, strategic leader to provide trusted and quality advisory and support services to, or on behalf of, the Director-General. The position acts as a critical interface between the Department and the Attorney-General's office, requiring a deep understanding of the Attorney-General's top priorities and their alignment to the Department's key projects and initiatives.

Reporting to the Director-General, this position provides multifunctional team leadership across Cabinet and Parliamentary Services, Executive Support and Departmental Liaison. You will also possess a sound understanding of public policy with proven political acumen and strategic thinking skills. Your judgement and confident decision-making capabilities together with high-level, sophisticated communication skills will support success in this role.

As Executive Director, you will lead the Office of the Director-General and act as a trusted advisor to the Director-General, providing recommendations and resolutions across a wide range of portfolio matters. Highly flexible, dependable and resourceful, you will draw upon your strategic collaboration skills to build strong relationships, communicating across diverse internal and external stakeholder groups. Your success in collating, synthesising, processing and presenting information to the Director-General will help advance departmental objectives, resolve emerging issues and prevent reputational damage.

Leading teams across the Cabinet and Parliamentary Services, Departmental Liaison and Executive Support areas, you will draw upon your highly polished communications, public policy understanding and strategic leadership capabilities to maintain a highly engaged, respectful and committed team culture. Leading by example, you will be responsible for ensuring efficient and effective office management, including budget oversight and adherence to statutory responsibilities, government priorities and departmental policies.

You will also coordinate and prepare high-level executive correspondence on behalf of the Director-General, including speeches, reports and briefing notes and arrange departmental responses across a broad range of Justice portfolio management matters. As Executive Director, you will also be responsible for representing the Director-General at key Ministerial or whole-of-government forums and internal departmental governance committees.

As the Executive Director, Office of the Director-General, you will bring:

  • Strategic leadership: Proven expertise in leading and navigating teams within large and complex organisations.
  • Strategic acumen: Sound critical reasoning skills and confidence in exercising strong judgement and decision making including identifying emerging issues across other intergovernmental agencies, thinking innovatively, beyond conventional norms.
  • Executive advisory skills: Significant and proven experience in providing trusted counsel to senior level executives on key strategic policy and operational related matters.
  • Public Administration expertise: Extensive experience in navigating complex public administration policies and systems.
  • Exceptional stakeholder engagement skills: Highly skilled in collaborating, communicating and negotiating with diverse stakeholders, managing sensitive matters with discretion, and building strategic partnerships internally and externally.
  • Enhanced written and verbal communications: With the ability to converse with all levels of staff, prepare high-level public sector correspondence including speeches, reports memoranda and briefing notes and coordinate departmental responses on a wide range of subjects.
  • Executive Team leadership: Demonstrated success leading teams, ideally in complex public sector environments, where significant levels of autonomy and delegation are required that allow for flexibility when adapting to plans and policies.
  • Drive to promote a respectful and inclusive workplace culture: Encouraging individuals to share a personal responsibility for promoting health and safety, valuing diversity and equity.

Although there are no mandatory qualifications, relevant tertiary qualifications in legal or justice fields or a working knowledge of social policy issues will be highly regarded.
