About us
The Queensland Human Rights Commission (QHRC or Commission) is an independent statutory body with responsibilities under two Queensland laws, the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991 (ADA) and the Human Rights Act 2019 (HRA). Our purpose is to strengthen the understanding, acceptance and promotion of human rights in Queensland, and to eliminate discrimination and sexual harassment. Our team
The Yirmba First Nations Unit (YFNU) was established in early 2024. YFNU works to protect and fulfill the rights of First Nations people across Queensland. YFNU aims to ensure that QHRC becomes a valuable tool for First Nations people to achieving freedom, respect, equality, dignity, and self-determination in their everyday lives. By regular meaningful engagement with First Nations communities, YFNU will work collaboratively to identify and dismantle structural barriers to equality.

Your role
Reporting to the Manager, Yirmba First Nations Unit, this role supports engagement with First Nations communities in line with the Commission's First Nations action plan. You will assist in developing and delivering targeted human rights education and provide specialist advice to stakeholders on issues impacting First Nations communities.

This is an identified position open only to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander applicants. The role may involve exposure to confronting material; resilience is important. Please see the role description below for further information.

Mandatory requirements
This role is open only to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander applicants. It is a genuine occupational requirement under Sections 25, 104, and 105 of the Queensland Anti-Discrimination Act 1991.

Applicants must:
• Be of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent;
• Identify as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person;
• Be accepted as such by the community in which they live;
• Possess knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Islander culture and history

The role involves travel including to remote locations and requires a current driver's licence. A copy must be provided prior to engagement.
