Are you passionate about biodiversity data and keen to support the scientific work of the Queensland Herbarium? The Biodiversity Data Officer helps maintain and improve specimen and taxonomy data held by the Queensland Herbarium and Biodiversity Science, supports digital data workflows, and contributes to ensuring our biodiversity information is accurate and accessible for downstream data users and decision makers. You will work closely with scientists, data specialists and system users to strengthen the quality and usability of Queensland’s botanical data, supporting taxonomic research, conservation, and representation of the state’s flora.

The Queensland Herbarium and Biodiversity Science unit (QHBS) is the centre for science, research and authoritative information on Queensland's flora, fungi, algae and ecosystems. QHBS provides biodiversity knowledge that underpins decision making across government, industry, land management and conservation, and supports research communities through the curation of the state's botanical collections and associated data. The Biodiversity Data Officer plays an important role in supporting the delivery of accurate and up-to-date botanical data that fits within industry data standards for interoperability and accessibility. Working within the Herbarium's Data and Informatics functions, the position helps maintain specimen records and taxonomic data, supports data ingestion and validation workflows, and assists with the curation and management of biodiversity information used across the department and beyond. The role contributes to improving digital systems, streamlining data processes, and supporting downstream users who rely on Herbarium data for research, conservation assessments, statutory reporting, and environmental planning.

Key aspects of the role include:
• Implementing taxonomic updates and name changes within the taxonomy database
• Implementing data quality procedures
• Assisting with coordination of data sharing to external data repositories, such as WildNet, AVH and ALA
• Working with scientists and technical specialists to resolve data issues. 
• The position also contributes to documentation, user training and the continuous improvement of our data systems and processes.
