The Opportunity
As a Senior Lawyer you will operate as a trusted in-house adviser within a small, highly capable legal team. You will have genuine autonomy to manage matters end-to-end and provide clear, practical legal advice across a diverse portfolio of work.
You'll work closely with internal stakeholders, executive leaders and external bodies, contributing to decision-making at an organisational level.
Reporting to the Manager, Legal Services, this role supports capability uplift through mentoring and provides exposure to complex, varied and high-impact legal matters
What you'll do
Using your legal expertise and public sector experience, you will:
- provide expert written and verbal legal advice across statutory interpretation, administrative law, regulatory and investigation matters, and contractual and commercial issues.
- research and analyse complex legal issues and provide clear, practical recommendations.
- support organisational obligations relating to Right to Information and Information Privacy.
- contribute to maintaining QLeave's delegation manual, insurances, and national reciprocal arrangements.
- review and provide assurance over contracts, memoranda of understanding, internal policies and procedures, and administrative reviews.
- identify emerging legal risks and support the development of mitigation strategies.
- represent QLeave in tribunals and courts, including the Queensland Industrial Relations Commission and Industrial Magistrates Court as required.
- manage a small litigation caseload and support briefing of external legal providers.
- build capability by mentoring and supervising legal team members and delivering guidance and training to staff.
What We're Looking For
You are a confident legal professional who brings sound judgement, strong communication skills and a collaborative approach to your work.
You will be successful in this role if you have:
- demonstrated experience providing high-quality legal advice in a complex, regulated environment.
- strong legislative interpretation and analytical skills.
- the ability to clearly communicate complex legal issues to non-legal stakeholders.
- experience managing competing priorities and delivering outcomes within timeframes.
- a collaborative approach and the ability to build trusted internal relationships.
Mandatory requirement:
Admission, or eligibility for immediate admission, as a solicitor or barrister of the Supreme Court of Queensland.
This role aligns with the Leadership Competencies for Queensland – Program Leader success profile, and requires someone who role models integrity, accountability and inclusive leadership.
