The Principal Legal Officer is responsible for providing high quality legal services and conducting litigation on behalf of the Health Ombudsman.

The Principal Legal Officer deals with the more complex and urgent matters, provides guidance, and mentoring to more junior legal officers, and assists the Directors in the Legal Services Division in managing the team.

In this role you will:

  • A significant focus on providing high quality, professional and timely legal advice (written and oral) to the Health Ombudsman, and divisions within the OHO, across a broad range of more complex legal issues, including in relation to statutory interpretation, release of information and confidentiality, human rights considerations, crime and corruption matters, public interest disclosures, administrative law, evidence law, criminal law, hospital and health law and contract law matters.
  • Undertake litigation in disciplinary proceedings including the drafting of referrals, advising on evidence, holding discussions with legal representatives for practitioners and generally preparing matters for hearing.
  •  Undertake other legal actions as directed, including prosecutions on behalf of the Health Ombudsman.
  • Manage Court caseloads, including complying with directions, timetables and orders issued other Courts and preparing for and attending directions hearings
  • Prepare show cause notices for interim and permanent prohibition orders for unregistered health providers.
