The Opportunity
About the role
As our temporary Principal Internal Auditor, you will have the following key responsibilities:
• Work collaboratively with and provide strategic support to the Head of Internal Audit (HIA) in the delivery of complex financial, operational, IT internal audits and advisory engagements across DPI to assess the design and effectiveness of internal controls, determine legislative and departmental compliance and/or professional/industry standard alignment.
• Provide key support in function execution under a co-sourced model in strategic annual internal audit plan delivery and operating in accordance with the DPI Internal Audit Charter (November 2025).
• Prepare comprehensive and high quality written reports and briefs/correspondence on internal audit engagement results for HIA review and
presentation to key stakeholders, DPI Leadership Board (DLB), Director-General and Audit and Risk Committee (ARC) with practical recommendations / actions to address gaps. Assist in quarterly and annual audit activity status report preparation.
• Lead the implementation status follow up of internal audit and relevant Queensland Audit Office (QAO) recommendations including adequacy assessment of corrective actions, stakeholder engagement and inclusion in quarterly internal audit reporting.
• Perform the ARC secretariat function in coordination with the HIA and ARC Chair: drafting agenda, coordination and distribution of papers (including ARC action follow up), drafting meeting minutes and actions for ARC Chair review and endorsement.
• Actively contribute to the annual planning process and risk-based annual internal audit plan development for effective coverage of DPI operations, current and emerging risks.
• Develop and foster strong networks and relationships across DPI to deliver function priorities.
• Assist HIA in managing the co-source provider engagement and contract. Effective collaboration: day to day delivery, appropriate scoping risk alignment, timely fieldwork and draft report completion, coordination of management feedback and agreed actions. Leverage knowledge and skills transfer.
• Be proactive in your role: identify improvement strategies and streamline processes utilising data analytics or technology for expanded internal audit coverage and efficient action monitoring.
• Input into and assist the HIA to provide fit for purpose and independent advice to DLB, senior management, process stakeholders, project boards/steering committees/governance forums in relation to governance, risk management and control design and operating effectiveness.
• Maintain continuing professional development, relevant knowledge and understanding of global internal audit professional standards and modern audit practice and techniques.
• Demonstrate personal integrity, tact and discretion and act ethically in all matters.
• Contribute to the DPI Internal Audit Quality Assurance and Improvement Program (QAIP) and global requirements of the Institute of Internal Auditors International Professional Practices Framework.
