The Queensland Government is looking for a Scientist.

The Paddock to Reef Integrated Monitoring, Modelling and Reporting Program’s paddock monitoring team of the Science division, based in Mackay, undertakes paddock and sub-catchment scale nutrient, sediment and pesticide monitoring projects relevant to wetlands and the sugarcane industry.

The Scientist (PO2) is a role in which you will:

  • Assist in the development and implementation of programmed paddock monitoring activities including liaison with landholders and other stakeholders.
  • Provide scientific input into catchment management and monitoring programs, and research on particular issues associated with natural resource management.
  • Assist and undertake research and monitoring activities including:
    • experimental design
    • instrumentation installation, operation and maintenance
    • field and laboratory procedures (e.g. collection and processing of soil, water and plant samples)
    • analysis and interpretation of data (e.g. water quality, soil processes, nutrient fluxes)
    • the recording, secure management and assessment of scientific data
    • maintain databases for the collection and storage of data
    • reporting of results within a quality assurance framework
    • assessment, analysis and reporting of monitoring data for communication to internal and external clients, stakeholders and the community.
  • Assist in the preparation of work programs and budgets to ensure that paddock monitoring and assessment activities meet the required timing, technical and budgetary outcomes.
  • Contribute as both a member of a multi-disciplinary team and independently as required to ensure that projects and objectives are met in an efficient and timely manner.
  • Assist or supervise professional and technical staff working on monitoring programs, often in remote areas, as required.
  • Foster a workplace culture that supports and promotes the interests of First Nations people and actively engage through our work to contribute to better outcomes for First Nations people.
  • Other duties as directed or required.

What we are looking for

  • Experience in identifying problems and possible solutions including technology, research, and comprehension and critical evaluation of relevant technical information and data.
  • An ability to communicate in a clear, succinct and deliberate manner, adjusting the message so that it resonates and influences across a wide range of stakeholders including community members, colleagues, and industry representatives.
  • High level written communication skills that demonstrate experience in preparation of complex, technical data. Experience with statistical analysis packages (Excel, R, Genstat, python etc) are preferable.

 The ability to (rapidly) acquire knowledge of the paddock monitoring data sets and methods.

  • Personal accountability for learning, and eager pursuit of new knowledge and experiences and enthusiasm and creative thinking in order to develop an innovative approach to scientific publication.
