Are you an experienced and motivated lawyer looking to work at the heart of Queensland's economic, fiscal, and commercial decision-making?
In the role of Special Counsel, you will guide and mentor a skilled team of lawyers, oversee high-level legal matters, and deliver strategic, solutions-focused advice to empower decision-making at Treasury and its portfolio. This is a unique opportunity to manage legal strategies, build stakeholder trust, and contribute to projects shaping Queensland's economic future. Your exceptional attention to detail, leadership skills, and proven ability to mitigate legal risks will be key to your success.
In this role, you will:
- Provide expert legal advice across a wide array of legal matters, including commercial, administrative, energy, intellectual property, and technology law, as well as regulatory compliance.
- Draft, review, and negotiate contracts, delivering timely, accurate, and concise legal advice to internal and external stakeholders.
- Identify and mitigate legal risks while developing practical, risk-managed solutions for Treasury projects.
- Assist in the management and mentoring of legal staff, fostering professional excellence and continuous growth within the Legal Services team.
- Deliver strategic direction on Treasury projects, partnering with key stakeholders to meet objectives and maintain alignment with the government's legal risk management strategies.
- Manage the agency's legal spend and oversee relationships with external legal suppliers.
- Coordinate and supervise legal work while ensuring client service excellence, high-quality advice, and adherence to policies.
What experience you will bring:
- Significant legal experience across diverse fields and an ability to deliver strategic legal solutions, stakeholder management, client service, and project management.
- Demonstrated ability to clearly communicate complex legal advice and documents, both orally and in writing, to senior decision-makers under tight deadlines.
- Proven capability in collaborating with diverse stakeholders to develop effective, strategic solutions aligned to agency and whole-of-government risk management frameworks.
- Leadership skills, with a track record of managing legal teams effectively and fostering collaboration to meet organisational goals.
- A commitment to building a positive and healthy work environment, exhibited through mentoring, coaching, and developing the skills and experience of legal staff.
- A dedication to continuing professional development and maintaining high standards of education within the legal team.
Mandatory Qualifications
You must be admitted to practice law as a solicitor in Queensland.
