Continuous Shift Microbiology Scientist

We are excited to offer to the best suited applicants 6 part time roles within Pathology Queensland. As a Scientist in the Microbiology department at Princess Alexandra Hospital, you will assist in the provision of an effective and efficient pathology service to clients. This will include Molecular testing for Respiratory viruses including SARS-CoV-2 as well as routine Bacteriology and may include Serology and Mycology testing. The Scientist position is continuous shift and requires working day, evening and overnight shifts as required to provide 24-hour, 7-day service delivery. The Scientist reports to Microbiology Chief Scientist position or delegated Senior Scientist of the Microbiology department.

To be successful you will have demonstrated experience in microbiological culture techniques and light microscopy, including specimen preparation, aseptic handling, staining procedures, and accurate identification and documentation of microbial growth. The Continuous Shift Micro Scientist provides high-quality diagnostic microbiology services within a 24/7 laboratory environment. The role supports patient care by delivering accurate, timely testing and interpretation of microbiological specimens while working rotating continuous shifts.
Key competencies (role specific criteria):
You will be assessed on your ability to demonstrate the following key capabilities, knowledge and experience. Within the context of the responsibilities described above under ‘Your key responsibilities', the ideal applicant will be someone who can demonstrate the following:
- Knowledge, expertise and skill in the delivery of scientific judgement within the discipline of Microbiology.
- Demonstrated ability to prioritise specimens, to perform tests accurately and efficiently without direct supervision and to work independently towards the logical solution of scientific and technical problems.
- Demonstrated ability (or ability to rapidly acquire the skill) to read bacterial culture plates, determine antimicrobial susceptibility and perform organism identification.
- Demonstrated ability (or ability to rapidly acquire the skill) to perform microscopy (including Gram stain and cell counts) of all sample types received in the Microbiology laboratory.
- Ability to apply established principles to a Microbiology service with provision of results and clinical advice in a client focused manner.
- Ability to build and maintain appropriate relationships with team members, clients and stakeholders.
- Ability (or ability to rapidly acquire the skill) to identify, develop and implement quality and service improvement activities in accordance with National Association of Testing Authorities and International Organisation of Standardisation (NATA/ISO) accreditation/certification.
- Participate in the 24/7 roster, this may also include covering for staff on leave.
- The position requires scientists to rotate within all sections of the Microbiology departments following appropriate training and subject to operational requirements.
