This permanent full‑time role works closely with individuals, families and community groups to enhance access, engagement and culturally safe care within AODS and Mental Health services.

About the role

You'll play a key role in supporting culturally safe, community‑focused responses to alcohol and other drug use and mental health challenges. Working collaboratively across AODS, Mental Health and community partners, you will help reduce harm, improve wellbeing and strengthen service access for individuals and families.

  • Work with individuals, families and community groups to support harm‑reduction initiatives and enhance mental wellbeing.
  • Support education, prevention and early‑intervention activities, contributing to culturally safe programs and community capacity building.

Requirements

  • Under s25 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991, there is a genuine occupational requirement for the incumbent to be Indigenous to the Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Community.
  • Applicants must provide a reference from an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander person who can attest to their knowledge, skills or experience to demonstrate cultural capabilities where required. This person may be a community member, supervisor or work colleague.
  • C Class Motor Vehicle Licence.
  • Pre-employment screening will be conducted for the successful applicant, including Criminal History checks.
  • This is a VPD risk role and may require evidence of vaccination or immunity to: Hepatitis A/B, Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Pertussis, and Tuberculosis.
  • A period of probation may apply.

Mornington Island, also known as Kunhanhaa, is the largest of 22 islands in the Wellesley Islands group located in the southern Gulf of Carpentaria, Queensland. The only permanent community on the island, Gununa, is home to about 1,200 people, predominantly the Lardil people, who are the traditional custodians of the land.
