About us:

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Unit plays a vital role across the Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service, leading initiatives that improve health outcomes for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander patients. We provide high‑level advice, leadership and strategic direction to ensure culturally safe and effective policies, programs and services. Our team works in genuine partnership with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and organisations, influencing priority setting and planning through an evidence‑based approach. By collaborating with stakeholders across the health system, we maximise the impact of services and programs, supported by strong monitoring, evaluation and reporting processes that drive meaningful and sustained improvement.

Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service provide an extensive range of health services at more than 30 regional, rural and remote facilities across a geographical area of 142,900 square kilometres. The Health Service is 95 percent self-sufficient with only a small number of high-level acute services being provided in Townsville and Brisbane.
