About the Team

The Primary School Nurse Health Readiness Program (PSNHRP) is a state-wide initiative dedicated to optimising the health and wellbeing of Queensland children as they transition into primary school. The program delivers a universal, community-based vision screening service to all Prep-aged children across the state. The PSNHRP has a particular emphasis on the early identification of visual abnormalities to reduce preventable blindness and improve the developmental outcomes of Queensland children.

About the Role

The Clinical Nurse (CN) role provides advanced clinical and problem-solving skills, expert planning and coordination skills in the universal screening of children in Queensland, ensuring quality standards are met. This role works autonomously within the Healthcare Team structure and is pivotal in the planning, managing and delivering of specialist nursing care. The CN provides clinical leadership for professional and clinical practice, education and research.

This role offers a unique opportunity to guide culturally responsive and safe community-led approaches to ensure the PSNHRP better meets the needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and families.

The PSNHRP has identified that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and families experience a higher rate of lost‑to‑follow‑up after screening. A key goal of the program is to work in genuine partnership with communities, using a strengths‑based approach to develop culturally appropriate strategies that empower families.

  • Feedback from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community stakeholders has highlighted that current resources are not adequately responsive to community needs and do not reflect Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander values, languages or cultural identity
  • Representation builds trust – having Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander nurses in our workforce ensures our service reflects the communities we serve
  • Cultural knowledge strengthens care – community led approaches improve engagement by recognising and valuing cultural identify and strengths
  • Equity in outcomes - the role contributes to CHQ's health equity agenda by ensuring children have access to high quality, culturally safe vision screening

As part of this role you will:

  • Work alongside communities to understand local priorities and cultural practices
  • Promote equity and access by supporting pathways that make screening and follow-up care more culturally safe, welcoming and that empower families and communities.
  • Lead the co-design of health resources that reflect Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander values, languages and cultural identity
  • Be actively involved in quality improvement activities to ensure delivery of high-quality, safe, and effective care to children and their families.
  • Provide clinical leadership and coaching to Registered Nurses working within the PSNRHP and at times be involved in direct care delivery
