The Wildlife and Threatened Species Operations branch leads a statewide, tenure blind program to protect, conserve, and manage the sustainable use of Queensland's protected wildlife, through the review and development of policy and legislation, education & community engagement, development of partnerships, compliance management and operational service delivery.

The Manager Southern Wildlife Operations is responsible for providing leadership and direction to facilitate sustainable management of protected wildlife through engagement and regulation strategies. The role provides strategic direction and operational management to the Southern Wildlife Operations team and its programs, high level advice and support to the Director Southern Wildlife & Koala Operations and is responsible for ensuring key projects and initiatives are delivered according to priorities, timelines & targets.

The Department of the Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation is seeking to appoint an experienced and passionate person to provide leadership and direction to a geographically dispersed team to facilitate the sustainable management of protected wildlife through engagement and regulation strategies.

The successful applicant will provide strategic direction and operational management to the Southern Wildlife Operations team and its programs, high level advice and support to the Director Southern Wildlife and Koala Operations and is responsible for ensuring key projects and initiatives are delivered according to priorities, timelines, and targets. They will promote awareness, appreciation and understanding of the conservation values of native flora and fauna to the public while enhancing their understanding of relevant legislative obligations.

The Southern Wildlife Operations team operates across the southern regions of Queensland to deliver services to conserve and protect native and threatened wildlife and associated habitat—with particular focus on:

  • Responding to wildlife management activities.
  • Providing education and engagement around safe interactions between people and wildlife.
  • Working with stakeholders and First Nations groups to build collaborative partnerships to protect, educate and manage wildlife.
  • Applied research and monitoring to assist in the development of innovative wildlife management strategies.

To achieve the outcomes required by the role, you must be able to:

  • Lead and manage a geographically disperse team to facilitate the sustainable management of protected wildlife through engagement and regulation strategies and ensure effective implementation of programs and delivery of program targets according to the State's priorities for wildlife management.
  • Identify emerging issues and challenges in the policy, legislative and operational aspects of wildlife management and contribute to setting, planning and leading the strategic and tactical direction of the Branch and its programs.
  • Lead the development, implementation and evaluation of major and innovative policy and operational initiatives and projects for the efficient delivery of wildlife management programs.
  • Provide strategic high-level policy, legislative and operational advice on Branch issues, programs and functions, including the preparation of high-level submissions, briefing notes and Ministerial and executive correspondence regarding complex issues and often within tight timeframes.
  • Engage and negotiate with a range of internal and external stakeholders and partners to facilitate legislative and policy outcomes, achieve performance targets and establish partnership arrangements.
  • Develop and maintain effective strategic intra- and inter-departmental and community networks and represent the Branch and/or the department on high level working groups and committees regarding wildlife management issues.
  • Foster a workplace culture that supports and promotes the interests of First Nations people and actively engage through our work to contribute to better outcomes for First Nations people.
  • Promote a safe, respectful and inclusive workplace that is free from bullying, discrimination and harassment.

The position location is flexible within the role's area of operation however travel to other locations across and outside of the region may be required from time to time, including overnight stays.
