About the role
Reporting to the Medical Director of General Surgery, the Principal House Officer will provide comprehensive clinical services to patients within General Surgery and Urology, ensuring continuity of care and effective communication with senior medical staff and allied health teams.
Key responsibilities include the day-to-day management of patients in pre-operative and post-operative units and surgical wards, coordinating investigations, implementing treatment plans directed by senior clinicians, and ensuring accurate and timely clinical documentation, including discharge summaries.
The role also includes supervision and teaching of junior medical staff and medical students, participation in quality improvement and audit activities, and contributing to a positive learning environment within the department. The appointee will participate in rostered overtime, late shifts, weekends, and public holidays as required.
About you
Our ideal candidate will be someone who can carry out the following key accountabilities in accordance with the Metro North Health's values:
- Fulfil the responsibilities of this role in accordance with Queensland Health's core values, as outlined above.
- Take responsibility for overall management of patients in the preoperative and post operative recovery units as well as the Ward providing information to consultants and those of other specialities; implement decisions of senior medical staff for patient care.
- Supervise the selection and prompt evaluation of appropriate investigations.
- Communicate effectively with patients and their relatives. Ensure appropriate documentation is placed in the patient clinical record. This includes a discharge summary at the time the patient leaves the unit.
- Maintain appropriate liaison with nursing staff and allied health personnel.
- Provide medico-legal reports as required.
