At State Library of Queensland, the Collection Building and Interpretation team grows the John Oxley Library collection to ensure that Queensland's rich and diverse history is documented, preserved and accessible for future generations.
In this role, you will drive the assessment and selection of materials for acquisition, applying specialist content knowledge to the rare materials marketplace, offers of donation, contemporary collecting opportunities and commissioning new digital content.

The Collection Building and Interpretation team plays a key role in implementing State Library's Content Strategy. Bringing a strategic focus to growing and maintaining State Library's Memory and Extraordinary Collections, the Collection Building team applies a comprehensive understanding of existing collections, Queensland history, current trends and clients' needs to ensure State Library's collections are diverse, representative and usable.
As a member of our Collection Building and Interpretation team you will ensure State Library collects a diverse record of Queensland as identified in our Content Strategy.
A key focus of this role will be to lead the selection of collections including the development of digital content.
Your key responsibilities will be:
- Selection of resources and materials that build the State Library collection including leading the commissioning of digital content within budget and agreed timeframes, and leading projects for library acquisitions.
- Responding to donation requests and managing complex donor and vendor relationships to build the collection.
- Communicating and interpreting the significance and impact of collection items to stakeholders.
- Undertaking high level research and providing expert advice and curatorial support for exhibitions and other public programs.
- Maintaining currency with specialist topic areas such as printed and original materials, non-traditional sources for acquiring materials including digital collections, preservation and digital standards, copyright, and Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property along with trends in library services.
- Contribute to a positive and safe work environment by ensuring conduct that is culturally capable, inclusive, respectful and ethical.
Role requirements
Qualifications Technical/educational:
To be considered for this role you are required to hold a relevant/related degree and eligibility for professional membership of the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA).
Operational experience:
Demonstrated experience working with heritage collections would be beneficial to this role.
High level knowledge of Queensland and Australian history will be highly regarded.
