The Aquatic Ecosystem Health group plays a central role in monitoring and assessing the condition of Queensland's waterways, estuaries and wetlands. Through programs spanning ambient water quality monitoring, freshwater biological surveys, seagrass assessments, wetland condition monitoring and fish modelling, the group provides the scientific foundation for regional waterway report cards and the Great Barrier Reef Report Card. This work underpins evidence‑based environmental management and supports collaboration with universities, research
agencies, regional NRM groups and government partners.

As the Science Leader (PO6), you will provide strategic scientific leadership to guide the design, implementation and delivery of aquatic ecosystem monitoring and assessment programs. You will oversee complex, high‑profile scientific initiatives that ensure accurate, cost‑effective reporting on environmental conditions and longterm trends across Queensland's coastal, estuarine and freshwater systems. A key
focus of the role is driving research and development to improve monitoring methodologies, enhance reporting frameworks and contribute to the development of Queensland's water quality guidelines.

You will offer high‑level tactical and technical advice to inform environmental policy, planning and strategic decision‑making. This includes contributing expert insights on aquatic ecology, water quality assessment, monitoring technologies and data systems. You will coordinate project outputs, negotiate timelines and ensure the delivery of high‑quality scientific products that meet the needs of government, regional bodies and community stakeholders.

Building and maintaining strong partnerships is essential to the role. You will work closely with regional waterway partnerships, councils, universities, science providers and multiple Queensland Government departments to support the delivery of regional report cards and Great Barrier Reef reporting. You will lead the development of reporting tools, databases and communication products, and present
findings through seminars, briefings, papers and stakeholder engagements. As a senior leader, you will manage the financial, capital, intellectual property and human resources of the Aquatic Ecosystem Health group, ensuring compliance with legislation, departmental policies and strategic priorities. You will foster a highperforming team of scientists and technicians, cultivating a collaborative, inclusive and solutions‑focused culture aligned with the department's vision. This includes supporting staff development, encouraging innovation and promoting a safe, respectful and harassment‑free workplace.

The role also involves developing integrated assessment tools and decision‑support systems to address emerging knowledge needs in water quality management. You will provide expert advice, negotiate with stakeholders and ensure that scientific outputs are robust, transparent and fit for purpose.

This is a leadership opportunity for an experienced aquatic ecosystem scientist who is passionate about advancing environmental monitoring, strengthening partnerships and delivering high‑quality science that supports the health and resilience of Queensland's waterways.
