Metropolitan South Region is seeking passionate and skilled Youth Workers as part of our Wellbeing Workforce to support schools in strengthening student engagement, wellbeing, and attendance.

About the Role

This role is central to delivering on the department's Brighter Futures strategy, ensuring every young person is supported to remain engaged in learning, build positive pathways, and experience success at school and beyond.

Working as part of a multi-disciplinary team, the Youth Worker provides targeted early intervention and wraparound support for students at risk of disengagement. The role is grounded in a strengths-based, relational, and trauma-informed approach, partnering with students, families, and school staff to recognise and respond to students' social, emotional, academic and engagement needs, and intervene early through advice, guidance, and practical support.

Key Responsibilities

Direct Support to Students

  • Provide individual and group support to enhance social and emotional wellbeing, engagement, attendance and learning outcomes
  • Develop and implement targeted programs that build social skills, resilience, self-esteem, and problem-solving capacity
  • Identify students at risk of disengagement and provide timely, early intervention support

Work with Families and Carers

  • Strengthen partnerships between school and home, supporting families to engage in their child's education
  • Assist families to access relevant services and supports, reducing barriers to participation
  • Act as a key point of connection to improve continuity of engagement and attendance

Collaborative Practice

  • Work within a school-based and regional multi-disciplinary team (Guidance, Social Work, Psychology, Therapy and Nursing and Wellbeing Workforce)
  • Support teachers and wellbeing teams to develop and implement targeted intervention and engagement plans
  • Contribute to shared case management and coordinated responses for students with complex needs

Whole School Contribution

  • Monitor and respond to attendance and engagement data to inform early action
  • Contribute to whole-school wellbeing strategies and initiatives
  • Support the development of a safe, inclusive and supportive school culture

Community and Partnerships

  • Build strong connections with community organisations and external agencies
  • Facilitate referrals and support students and families to navigate services effectively

Governance and Accountability

  • Maintain accurate records, case notes and data systems
  • Operate within departmental policies, procedures and professional standards
  • Participate in supervision and report to the Principal or delegate

Additional Information

  • Full-time and part-time opportunities may be available
  • A regional talent pool will be established
  • Salary advertised reflects 1.0 FTE

Mandatory Requirements

  • Current Working with Children Check (Blue Card)
  • Relevant experience in youth work, community services or a related field
  • Strong capacity to work collaboratively in complex school environments
  • Driver's licence
