As a Nurse Practitioner (NP) for CHHHS you will work in collaboration with the Nurse Unit Manager, Senior Medical Officer and wider CHHHS program team to support the LGHS in provision of safe quality healthcare to Prisoner clients through exemplary clinical nursing standards of practice for the specialty of primary care including care of people with long-term conditions and/or emergency care.

Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service covers an area of 142,900 square kilometres. We go as far as Tully in the south, Cow Bay in the north and Croydon in the west.

About us:

Lotus Glen Health Service (LGHS) is a rapidly growing division within the CHHHS region, delivering primary health care services to detained, remanded and sentenced prisoners located at the Lotus Glen Correctional Centre (LGCC) and Lotus Glen Open Custody Farm. The Secure Centre has a capacity to house approximately 976 prisoners and the Open Custody Farm accommodates 124 prisoners. The main catchment area of the centre is North Queensland, with a disproportionately large representation from first nations communities. Nursing cover is provided 24/7 with nursing staff responsible for patient assessment, minor treatment and patient transfers.

In your new role you will:

  • Provide a high standard of service delivery; provides service users with a positive perception of the work area by establishing and building effective and respectful collegial client relationships.
  • Demonstrate advanced clinical evidence-based skill and knowledge in the care of a client group with acute/non-acute and significant and complex health needs, which are often long-term or chronic in nature, service coordination and interdisciplinary care management, evidenced by feedback, recency of practice and achieved clinical competencies.
  • Demonstrate the ability to foster evidence based practice, that promotes high standards of care for the Lotus Glen Health Service and demonstrates a commitment to and pride in the services delivered to the male prisoner population.
  • Participate in education and training activities for less experienced staff and undertake QI/research activities in collaboration with the Nursing and Midwifery Education and Research Unit
