As Principal Systems and Data Coordinator, you lead the transformation of data and information management capability across DETSI Water Ecosystem Sciences (WES). Driving enhancements, integration and development of systems; establishing governance processes; and strengthening technical and workforce capability to advance FAIR (findable, accessible, interoperable, reusable) data principles. The position leads a small specialist team, collaborates with partners across DETSI and external sectors, supports lifecycle data management in complex scientific environments, and contributes to the delivery of scientific computing services. The role also fosters a culture that supports improved outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

The Principal Systems and Data Coordinator plays a critical leadership role in accelerating, improving and transforming the data and information management capability within DETSI Water Ecosystem Sciences (WES). The position is responsible for aligning WES data and system practices with departmental and divisional strategic directions, enabling enhanced environmental science capability across the organisation. This includes coordinating enhancements to existing systems, supporting integration across platforms, and leading the development of new data and information management systems where required.
A core component of the role is establishing and implementing robust data and information governance processes.
The Principal Systems and Data Coordinator leads a small team of specialist scientific data system professionals providing direction, guidance and expertise to support delivery of the program.
You will work closely with science business units across WES to support the full lifecycle
management of data and information.
The role requires strong collaboration with a broad range of partners across business groups within DETSI, including Digital Information Services, Environmental Services and Regulation, Environmental Policy and Planning, as well as collaborating with research organisations and industry. These relationships enable
solutions that address shared data and information management challenges and support the alignment of scientific systems across the wider science business. You will undertake diverse system and data management activities, including reporting, assessment, problem solving
and continuous improvement.
You will uphold and promote workplace culture that supports better outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This includes actively engaging in
inclusive practices, ensuring culturally respectful approaches to data and information management, and contributing to broader departmental commitments to First Nations communities.
