Springfield Central State High School is seeking a motivated and organised Science Technician (Scientific Officer) to join our team in a part-time capacity.

This role provides an excellent opportunity to contribute to a high-performing science faculty by supporting the preparation, organisation and safe delivery of practical learning experiences for students.

You will play an important part in enabling engaging, hands-on science learning across the school and supporting high quality teaching and learning in our science laboratories.

This position is being offered in a Temporary Part-Time capacity (0.6FTE), 43.5 hours per fortnight.

This is a progressional position as per the Role Description. The successful applicant will be appointed to the lower classification with eligibility for progression to the next, once specific criteria have been met or demonstrated. Please note salary rate shown is reflective of both classification ranges.

Your Role:

The successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to maintaining high standards of safety, efficiency and support within the science department.

This position is currently offered three days per week, Wednesday, Thursday & Fridays, with a strong possibility of increased hours or full-time employment from 2027 as our science programs continue to grow.

Responsibilities include:

  • Prepare, set up and pack away laboratory equipment, materials and resources for science lessons, demonstrations and practical experiments.
  • Assist teaching staff with the preparation and organisation of practical science activities.
  • Maintain science laboratories, preparation rooms and chemical storage areas to a high standard, ensuring they remain organised, clean and compliant.
  • Ensure the safe handling, storage and disposal of chemicals and hazardous materials in accordance with Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) requirements and departmental procedures.
  • Maintain and manage the Chemwatch system, including chemical registers, Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and manifests.
  • Monitor laboratory consumables and equipment, maintaining stock levels and coordinating purchasing of chemicals, materials and laboratory supplies in line with school processes.
  • Prepare chemical solutions and specialised materials required for classroom experiments.
  • Maintain laboratory equipment and coordinate servicing or repairs when required.
  • Support WHS compliance within the science laboratories, including maintaining safety documentation and registers.
  • Assist with WHS audits, risk assessments and compliance checks relating to chemical storage, equipment and laboratory environments.
  • Work collaboratively with teaching staff to support effective and engaging science learning experiences.
