Principal Project Officer

This role provides senior technical and project leadership for delivery of the high profile Wangetti Trail ecotourism project within the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area, contributing to the Queensland Government’s Destination 2045 vision. As part of a multidisciplinary project team, the position leads complex planning and delivery activities for the trail and associated visitor infrastructure across Mowbray and Macalister Range national parks, ensuring works are scoped and delivered in accordance with legislation, conditions of approval, relevant standards and departmental policies.

A core aspect of the position is managing the technical components of project development, including coordinating environmental approvals and development approvals, developing and reviewing design briefs, generating design specifications and technical standards for tender and construction. The role provides authoritative advice on risk, constructability and compliance in sensitive protected area settings.
The role is heavily involved in procurement, including defining procurement strategy, preparing tender documentation and evaluation criteria, leading or supporting evaluation processes, and administering higher‑risk and higher‑value contracts to achieve best‑value outcomes.
The position also maintains an on‑ground presence to validate site constraints, confirm construction quality, and undertake inspections and audits associated with construction and maintenance works, preparing reports that identify issues and improvements required. The role also drives continuous improvement in planning, procurement, delivery and governance to support the statewide capital delivery program.
