Queensland is facing a complex future, with the increased frequency and impact of disasters often resulting in serious damage and disruptions to Queensland communities. We are looking for team members to help strengthen our disaster management system to ensure we are ready for what is to come.

As the Senior Program Officer (Disaster Management, Monitoring and Evaluation), you will be part of a small yet highly effective team to support the Office of the IGEM to provide independent assurance about Queensland's disaster management arrangements to build confidence in our system.

You will proactively contribute to key aspects of disaster management reviews, assurance activities, and community forums and consultation activities, that support the delivery of the Office's strategic objectives. You will undertake high-level administrative, project coordination, research, analysis and reporting activities to support the Inspector-General Emergency Management in assuring best practice emergency management in Queensland, helping to make Queensland a safer more resilient state through disaster Prevention, Preparedness, Response, Recovery and Resilience.

The Senior Program Officer (Disaster Management, Monitoring and Evaluation) will have a sound understanding of Queensland's disaster management arrangements and previous experience in disaster management is highly desirable. A valid Queensland "C" class driver's licence or equivalent is also highly desirable.

Your key accountabilities include:

  • Prepare and contribute to timely, concise and well researched briefing papers, complex reports, discussion papers, submissions, presentations, speeches, publications, and assist in the drafting of media releases and talking points for consideration by senior management and executive management.
  • Develop and manage positive working relationships and partnerships with colleagues and with other levels of government, industry and non-government organisations to achieve policy outcomes and deliver on Government commitments.
  • Develop and promote positive relationships through effective written and verbal communication with team members, clients, stakeholders and non-government organisations by anticipating and being responsive to client and stakeholder needs and expectations.
  • Provide high level advice and support to managers and staff in support of effective and consistent delivery of services.
  • Develop and implement improved practices and processes, including coordinating and undertaking project management activities.
  • Actively working to understand customers' and stakeholders' needs, building a strong awareness of customer perspectives and requirements and to deliver disaster management assurance and reporting activities accordingly.
  • Facilitate, design and deliver capability development and training to colleagues and stakeholders.

The role sits within the Leadership Competencies for Queensland, which describe effective leadership behavious across the public sector. This position is classified as Individual Contributor - Leading self, meaning the role does not have formal people management responsibilities, but requires personal accountability, professionalism and self-leadership.

Role requirements:

  • Legal right to work in Australia (mandatory)
  • No mandatory qualifications, technical, operational or educational experience.
