About the service

There is a natural recovery period for individuals who experience psychological distress during and following disasters. Most people are restored to their previous level of psychological and social functioning within weeks or a few months of the event. The prevalence of disaster-associated mental health disorders (typically Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Major Depression) varies from one disaster to another, however research suggests around 33% of those people exposed to significant disaster-related trauma could be expected to need mental health care.

In the event of a disaster, a post disaster mental health recovery team will be deployed in affected regions to provide:

  • mental health, alcohol and other drugs services to consumers who, as a direct result of the impact and aftermath of a disaster, are:
    • at risk of developing severe mental health disorders
    • experiencing mild to moderate mental health problems
  • consultation to service providers working with individuals impacted by a disaster across the catchment to support appropriate referral and early intervention
  • community education and information regarding mental health wellbeing and resilience following a disaster through attendance at key community activities throughout the relevant HHS
  • enhanced referral and linkage to mental health support and treatment services through attendance at key community activities and opportunistic intervention and support.
