About us:
The Medical Assessment Unit (MAU) within Medicine 1 at Cairns Hospital is a fast‑paced inpatient unit providing short‑term assessment, stabilisation and management of adult patients with acute and complex medical conditions. The unit operates collaboratively with the Emergency Department and downstream inpatient wards to facilitate early senior clinical review, timely diagnosis, and efficient patient flow.
The MAU manages a high volume of patients presenting with a broad range of medical specialties including, but not limited to, general medicine, cardiology, respiratory, endocrinology, infectious diseases, renal, and gastroenterology. Patients admitted to MAU typically require intensive clinical assessment, rapid decision‑making and multidisciplinary coordination, with an expected length of stay generally less than 72 hours prior to discharge or transfer to an inpatient ward.

About your role:
- Contribute to organisational key objectives and performance indicators and accountable for outcomes and achievement of service performance targets which aligns with the strategic and operational plan.
- Coordinate clinical practice delivery in clinical specialty of general medicine.
- Provides specialist clinical advice, recommendations and education to individuals and groups including patients, their carers and staff with diverse requirements via a range of mediums.
- Advanced level of decision making in collaboration with multi-disciplinary team.
