About your opportunity

As a Resident Medical Officer employed in the ED you will work with and under the supervision of experienced FACEMs and Emergency Medicine trainees in a department with a strong culture of teaching, research, and excellence in Emergency Medicine. 

The tertiary level ED at Townsville University Hospital cares for over 100,000 emergency patient presentations per year from across all ages and genders who present with a wide variety medical, surgical, traumatic, obstetric, paediatric, toxicological, and mental health conditions.

PLEASE NOTE:  This is a temporary full-time role, between 1 - 2 years and works solely in the Emergency Department and is not a rotational role. 

Emergency Department

There are 35 Registrar/PHO positions, 22 ED RMO, 18 rotational RMO and 14 Intern positions who are supported by 45 ED Staff Specialists including 3 PEMS (paediatric emergency medicine specialists) and 4 Physician Assistants.

Resuscitation room – 2 adult and 1 paediatric bay, in-room Xray.

Acute Hall – Patient's allocated to acute are usually of a higher acuity and complexity, with a higher likelihood of requiring admission.

Fast Track Hall - Fast track and consult rooms are staffed by medical staff, nurse practitioners and primary care physiotherapists.

Paediatric Area - includes a neonatal bay and additional staffing with general paediatric trainees.

Emergency Department Short Term Treatment Area – this is a 16 bed area for patients requiring extended emergency stays, or toxicological admissions.

What can I expect as an Emergency Medicine Resident Medical Officer:

  • Rostered shifts are early 0800-1800, late 1230-2230 and night 2200-0830).
  • Access to full day dedicated emergency education days (paid education 19 hours per 10-week term – pro rata part-time).
  • 1 week of Professional Development leave per annum (pro rata part-time) and access to courses relevant to Emergency Medicine.
  • Rotational rosters with exposure to Resuscitation (ED RMOs have a dedicated role on the resuscitation team), Admitting, Fast Track, Paediatrics and Short Stay.
  • 6 weeks recreation leave per year (pro rata part-time).
  • 4 Registrars (including 1 senior registrar) on site overnight provide supervision.
  • Minimum of 4 ED Consultants on clinical duty within the ED 0800-2300 7 days per week with 1 on-call overnight. 
  • Attractive travel and relocation package as per Directive 11/11.

Requirements:

  • Completion of a medical degree MBBS or equivalent (i.e. MD etc).
  • Successful completion of internship.
  • Demonstrated experience and/or interest in pursuing further training in the specialty of Emergency Medicine will be highly regarded.
  • Participation in a shift work roster, including day, late and night shifts, on weekdays and weekends, and oncall shifts (approximately 1 per month) is a requirement of the position.
